Assignment 1-2
Popular Culture is the ideas, prospective, and attitudes I perceive from watching the television, reading in the newspapers or magazines, and browsing on the internet. Popular Culture is something that happens or occurs every day or second in my culture. It doesn’t matter what I buy because there is someone else out there that wants the same item or the best on the market. I read about Pop Culture in the newspaper or hear about it on the television. I even run across it when I am browsing on the internet. No matter where I go, Popular Culture will always be around me until the day I die.
Popular Culture is relevant to me in a business environment because I had or will work with another individual who is from a completely different culture. Their culture may be different than mine but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t like the same thing that I do in my culture. During my life whether it’s the present or later on in the future, I will meet many different people who live differently than I do or who will like the same thing I do in my culture. I work with many other women now that originate from Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Japan, that listen to music in their countries and speak very little English but they try too.
I would consider being an example of a pop culture artifact is a television show I watch every Tuesday, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. The show is based on molestation, child abuse, rapists, and murder. When I watch the show, it makes me wonder why people do the things they do to other innocent people. I have also seen Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order, but it not as nearly as interesting as Law & Order: SVU because their shows are based on criminals, or murderers but have nothing to do with child abuse or molestation. I read in the newspapers every now and then about what some of their parents do to their kids and it is kind of sad or upsetting. Overall, I think Law & Order: SVU is one of the best shows out there because it shows me everything I need if I was a rape or molested victim. What steps I will need to take to solve this kind of crime.
Julie, are you a criminal justice major? If so, I can understand your fascination with Law & Order: SVU. I don't get very much free time, or at least it isn't anything consistent. So, I've only seen your show a few times. It is very good. After seeing the show though, I've wondered whether shows like that or CSI are really a good idea. While you are learning everything that you need to know if you were a victim of a rape or molestation, the criminals are also learning how not to get caught. It's definitely a catch-22 situation.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoy enjoy these shows but with young child I never have the time to watch them. I can see how watching these shows can help people observe others actions and possibly prevent or help a person of rape or molestation. I also agree with what Faith dill said in regards to criminals learning how not to get caught, that is the bad side to these shows.
ReplyDeleteFaith and Wade,
ReplyDeleteI am not in the criminal justice major. I just really enjoy watching Law and Order: SVU. The show is usually on Tuesdays or Saturdays so I use my DVR to record them if I don't have time to watch them.
